A Person You Helped
Part 2
Describe a time you helped someone.
You should say:
what the situation was
who the person was
how you helped him/her
and explain how you felt after helping him/her.
A young girl once was in need of my help when I was 12 years old. My cousin was 4 years old and had his 3 year old friend from down the street to visit. My mother told me to watch the younger kids in front of the house.
At first I was unhappy because I had to stop watching TV, but then my sister was told to help make lunch. She had to work hard cooking. All I had to do was watch two cute kids play, which was almost as good as TV.
The kids played for less than an hour, and nobody got hurt or lost. I started thinking I was doing a great job. It was probably better for everybody that I did not help with lunch, especially because I was so good at this.
Then, my mom called out the door that it was time for lunch. My 4 year old cousin ran inside as quickly and adorably as possible. I had to giggle. But I was left with the little girl. With a friendly smile, I leaned down and asked her if she would like some lunch. She looked up with the cutest little face and sad eyes. I almost giggled again, but I knew I looked scary because I was so tall next to her.
She told me with a pouty lip, “I lost my red bow.” Giggles were hard to fight back because she was even more adorable. I tried to focus and asked, “What does it look like?”She said with even more pouty looks, “Well, it’s red…”It was getting too cute, and I worried I could not handle it. I thought, “Don’t say it. Don’t say it. Don’t say it.”But it was too late. My question had been too simple. There was only one answer, and that three year old had to give it to me. “…and it’s a bow!” she declared. I no longer could hold myself together. I burst out laughing. Of course the red bow was red, and a bow!
But the little girl could not imagine the humour. She cried and ran home without the bow or lunch. I stood alone feeling terrible. It would have been so much better for me to burn everyone’s lunch than make that adorable little girl cry.
